Church immigrated to the US from Britain in 1977. His father was a missionary evangelist, and Dawson was schooled in the US and Southern Africa. He earned an undergraduate degree at Baylor University, and a doctorate at Holos University. Church has edited or authored over 200 books in the fields of health, psychology, and spirituality.[2][3] He earned his doctorate in Integrative Healthcare at Holos University, an non-accredited institution, under the mentorship of neurosurgeon Norman Shealy, founder of the American Holistic Medical Association. He went on to receive a postgraduate Ph.D. in Natural Medicine, as well as clinical certification in Energy Psychology (C.EHP).
Church founded Soul Medicine Institute, a nonprofit dedicated to research, education and therapies that link consciousness with healing. Soul Medicine Institute has several programs. They include the Iraq Vets Stress Project, which connects veterans seeking energy psychology treatments with an international network of therapists and coaches who provide free help. Soul Medicine Institute also publishes the peer-reviewed journal Energy Psychology: Theory, Research, Practice, Training (not PubMed indexed[4]). Through its research program, the Foundation for Epigenetic Medicine, it has funded or conducted several studies. They include an observational study of EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) for war veterans with PTSD which has found significant results, with veterans scoring PTSD-negative after six sessions of treatment.[5]
